Gracinda Oliveira, a 100-year-old Portuguese immigrant who became an American citizen in September, voted in an election for the very first time in her life last week.

Why become a citizen so late in life? To fulfill a long-awaited dream to vote in a presidential election.

She never had the chance to vote in Portugal due to dictatorship, and she hadn’t voted in the United States because she was an immigrant — until September when she finally became an American citizen.

Now, she hopes to encourage everyone to vote: “I did it for our country.”
