Mayor Jon Mitchell highlighted the big things the city has accomplished, addressed the budget deficit and challenges in education, and called current immigration enforcement “disgusting” in a wide-ranging hour-long discussion with New Bedford Light columnist Jack Spillane.

Mitchell joined The Chat with Spillane to talk about his recent State of the City and what the future of New Bedford looks like.

“We’re trying to build a city that is the cultural economic center of the region, a place that has a high functioning and trustworthy city government,” he said.

On fixing the budget deficit, he said, “Everything has to be on the table,” including cuts in programs and possible increases in property tax.

And on what he’s seen on the streets of New Bedford and nationally, “I think the Trump administration has gone way overboard on immigration enforcement.”
