Starting next year, a sprawling 6,000-square-foot gallery will allow the New Bedford Whaling Museum to bring national-level exhibits to the city in the realms of art, history and science. The construction of a 20,500-square-foot welcome center and exhibit space will make that possible.

In the meantime, there’s plenty to do at the museum this summer, whether it’s a world-class exhibition or a “robust” series of summer programs for younger visitors.

Whaling Museum Executive Director Amanda McMullen, Board of Trustees Vice Chair Bernadette Souza, and Chief Curator Naomi Slipp joined Light columnist Jack Spillane on The Chat Friday to discuss the $37 million project under construction, and what’s happening now at one of the gems of New Bedford.

    1. The expansion is being funded by fundraising efforts, loans, and grants the Museum has been awarded. This is not being funded by taxpayers.

      1. Thanks for the information and alleluia to that. In that case, maybe providing how to contribute would help. Even if it’s a little, I’d much rather donate than money being taken for unnecessary projects!

      2. Yes, the Whaling Museum has received taxpayer funding through CPA – Community Preservation Act.

  1. Tell the truth for once, most of regular New Bedford residents are not asked to or wanted at any of these events. Most of these organizational get togethers are more set up for the Biffs and Buffs of New Bedford and adjoining communities (the elite, the more fortunate those that can donate the big $ dollars). All you have to do is watch the videos of the events and it shows and tells the real story.
