It may be an American holiday, but for migrant families in New Bedford, Thanksgiving is a meaningful time to express gratitude for new beginnings and the opportunity to be together in a new country.
The holiday represents hope, resilience, and solidarity and offers the community the opportunity to blend their traditions with those of this nation.
“It will be a special day because we are reuniting as a family after being apart for four years,” says Dina Barrera, a Guatemalan living in the city. “We are going to cook a turkey and thank God for life and for the opportunity to reunite as a family.”
Turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce will be served, but with some twists. Rosalina Jovel, a Salvadoran, seasons her turkey with tomato sauce. And there are always tortillas.
“Because for us the tortilla is more important than bread,” says Jovel.
