When you step into the South End home of Isabel Gómez Hernández, you are greeted by pristine white walls and several panels displaying dozens of family photographs. The spotlight is on her daughter Yéssica, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in 2022 at the age of 22.
“We had many things in common. We liked the same colors and had the same drive to move forward,” Gómez Hernández said. Yéssica was a truck driver, something she wanted “since she was a little girl.” The driving bug bit Gómez Hernández too. And inspired by her daughter, she started her own school transportation company, Yessica Coreas School Transportation.
“She always motivated me, and in her honor, I decided to name my company after her,” said Gómez Hernández.
After obtaining her transportation license and buying a used minivan with money she had saved, her business was in motion. What started as her driving her daughter Blanca to school has evolved, and she now has 14 clients, mostly families who live too close to schools to qualify for public school bus transportation but too far away to walk.
She said she’s considering buying another vehicle and hiring a driver.
“There is a great need for student transportation,” she said.
