Attending college can be a financial challenge for families, leading many young people to either not go or drop out due to lack of resources. In Massachusetts, however, state scholarships can cover as much as the full cost of college tuition, allowing students to study free of charge at state universities and community colleges.

State Commissioner of Higher Education Noe Ortega emphasized that Massachusetts needs more professionals, especially in fields such as nursing, medicine, education, and counseling. For this reason, the state has launched this initiative. During a talk at New Bedford High School, he explained that this financial aid is available to many students, including undocumented immigrants.

One of the most frequently asked questions during the talk was whether undocumented immigrants can apply for Massachusetts Application for State Financial Aid  (MASFA).

“Since last year, all undocumented students can apply for MASFA, and those without a Social Security number receive guidance on how to identify themselves in the system,” Ortega said.

For many students and their families, this opportunity represents a significant change. One student, of Guatemalan origin, expressed relief knowing she could attend college without worrying about expenses.

“My mom works and doesn’t earn much, and this program would help me go to college without having to worry about expenses,” she said.

The application process for these scholarships is available through the Department of Higher Education website, where applicants must provide information about their family income. This will determine whether they qualify for full tuition waivers at community colleges and state universities.

  1. Don’t expect this policy of illegal immigrants, or the children of illegal immigrants who violated US Immigration Laws enter America and remain in America while hoping they can stay without being deported, and their children get a free college education in Massachusetts while my wife and I pay for our daughter to attend UMASS Dartmouth at our expense due to our gross income, and the insane taxes we pay annually while illegal immigrants and their children attend for free! I’m going to begin by calling State Senator Mark Montigny first to find out who is funding this so called “Free college education for MA residents who qualify including illegal immigrants”. I’m going to continue calling each MA State Senator, every MA State Representative, the tax & spend Governor Healy, and also US Senators Markey, and Warren. I’m going to call each of them multiple times each day, every day, until my daughter, and every other child of Massachusettes residents who are American Citizens who go to work every day, and pay every tax dollar Democrats require, and if our children born in America to parents who were born in America, and are all American Citizens, if our children don’t go to college at no cost, then there’s no way that even a single child of illegal immigrants will be getting a free college education, you can bet on that!!!!

    1. I agree. As for American Citizens we have always had to scrimp and save to give ourselves and our children a better life. One place to start is locally, where O’Leary and his administration wastes money and uses funds meant for things like COVID frivolously. To be an American born in America we grew up struggling at times but made it. Others see America as a free ride, your right, the ride stops here.
