Jesús Hernández and his wife Liset wake up every day at 3:30 in the morning. By 4 a.m., they are already in the kitchen preparing Salvadoran pupusas and Honduran baleadas for their food truck, “El Punto del Sabor.” Alongside them, a group of Hispanic women, experts in these traditional recipes from their home countries, help them cook with the same dedication they had back home.

The Hernández family run two trucks that travel the streets of New Bedford, especially the areas near the fish processing plants. By 7 a.m., they are serving breakfast to the workers, returning at noon with lunch.

On South Street, Carlos Galván and Leticia Vergara, a Mexican couple, have been running their food truck, “El Tarrito,” for 14 years. They serve tongue tacos, carnitas, frijoles machos, and burritos. Vergara said she is very strict about the quality of the ingredients, always ensuring the vegetables are fresh. “The lettuce has to be crunchy,” she insists.

Meanwhile, Guillermo Canseco parks his food truck, “Carreta Tampiqueña,” every day in front of Riverside Park. His specialty is giant burritos made with two large tortillas, along with quesadillas, tacos, and tostadas, all served in generous portions. From 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., his customers seek him out for hearty meals and Mexican flavors.

These food trucks are part of the Hispanic culinary scene that has made its mark on the streets of New Bedford, bringing with them a piece of the cultures they come from.

  1. You state at the beginning there are 5 trucks but you only talk about 3. Raffa Chimis makes great Puerto Rican/ Dominican dishes.
