Should women be allowed to help run New Bedford’s premier Portuguese Feast? Absolutely, say former City Councilor Jane Gonsalves and attorney Tara George, two of the seven Madeiran-American women who are challenging the organization that runs the Feast and excludes female members.
The pair joined The Chat host Jack Spillane for a lively hour Thursday afternoon and reiterated their plans to sue Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento if they are not given equal opportunity in the running of the annual festival.
“For a member to say my son can serve and my daughter can’t … What makes her less Madeiran?” said George.

Why do women volunteer and help if they are not allowed to be members? Why not boycott helping?
