It’s just before 9 a.m. and the thermometer is below 30 degrees in New Bedford. People, many with small children, arrive at the bus terminal wrapped in thick jackets, hats and scarves.
It’s a routine winter work day at the terminal, except for one thing: the bus ticket, which regularly costs $1.50, is free for the next six months. Many, especially the Latinos, are confused. But they are all happy and grateful.
“It’s a gift at the beginning of the year,” said Yadira Mejía, a Honduran mother shortly before boarding the bus with her son in her arms, at the corner of Acushnet Avenue and Bullard Street.
One man gets off the bus and does a quick mental calculation. “It’s $60 a month, $360 in six months. It’s good for my pocket.”
