What does an operating offshore wind farm look and sound like?

Come along with The Light’s reporters, who traveled 15 miles offshore last weekend to capture the fully installed Vineyard Wind farm. The last time The Light visited in 2024, the project had many blades and towers left to install, and the turbines that were in the water weren’t turning. But on this Saturday morning, reporters counted 15 turbines spinning with their football field-length blades amid 10-knot winds. Vineyard Wind’s CEO says its turbine maker, GE Vernova, has outstanding work to do to bring all 62 turbines up to full operational capacity.

  1. Vineyard Wind Only Producing 300 Megawatts
Vineyard Wind 1 was designed to generate 806 megawatts (MW) of electricity from 62 turbines, enough to power over 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts.

In a Suffolk Superior Civil Court filing, May 7, 2026, Case # 2684CV01041 Vineyard Wind 1 vs GE Renewables US LLC, it was disclosed that Vineyard Wind is producing 300 Megawatts.

The project is also not commercially viable. see quote

Several multiple quotes in the filing by Klaus Skoust Møller, a member of the Executive Committee of Vineyard Wind 1 LLC.

Quote: “10. That maximum theoretical output remains well short of the Project’s expected total nameplate capacity of approximately 806 MW. The Project’s current actual average output remains well below even that-and is closer to 300 MW.”

Quote: “13. As I explained in my prior declarations, the Project is not commercially viable at its current output levels.”

  2. The turbines are, dare I say, a graceful ocean orchard bringing electricity to MA. I am proud that we can be forward-thinking and not cling only to the old ways, so dependent on petroleum. America once led in forward thinking….that could make us great again.

  3. We drilled baby drilled. USA produces 120% of domestic demand but oil trades on an international market so when the supply chain abroad (20% of the world’s oil supply) is blockaded in response to war on Iran, we all pay more worldwide–American families have paid $13 billion *more* for gas price increases, just the increases, since the beginning of the Iran War.

Jet fuel represents about 1/3 of the cost structure of airlines and jet fuel has doubled in price. If what amounted to 1/3 of your costs doubles, basic economics predicts air fares will rise accordingly.

We knew this about oil and price inflation in the US economy since the 1970s and for the same reasons. Somehow Trump, who seems to take advice from Orban, Netanyahu and Putin more than his own cabinet didn’t get the memo. Trump is the only US president of the last four four who agreed with Netanyahu that an Iran nuclear ballistic missile was imminent, even as Trump said the US bombing campaign in June 2025 “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear sites.

Fracked gas prices have doubled as market faces supply-demand crisis. We use it to power gas turbine generated electricity and to heat our homes. The gas turbine market faces a significant market imbalance that will see prices surge 195% through 2027 due to increased electrification demand around the expansion of data centers for AI.

If you heat with gas, your cost will double.

If you heat with oil your costs have increased 50% since 1 year ago.

The average price of regular gasoline in Massachusetts has increased from $2.98 to $4.35 per gallon.

Electricity prices in Massachusetts have increased by 6.95% since 1 year ago.

  4. Electricity rates in the USA. MA has the 3rd highest of all the States. Thanks in large part to the governor blocking gas pipelines; the regulations forced on Utility companies and the war on Fossil Fuel by Presidents Obama and Biden. The Iran conflict will end and prices on oil will drop but you can’t say the same for electric prices in MA.

  5. Everyone is welcome to their opinion, for years it was all about saving the whales and protecting our waters from pollution and new construction. To install a new boat dock or dredge any waterway would almost take an act of God to complete. For a lot of us we wished the installation of Wind Turbines never happened and think it’s a source of pollution (anything you put in salt water rots), they harm the sea beds, hurt sea life, and do not produce enough electricity to help with our energy needs or lower the cost on our utility bills.
