Thanks to you, The New Bedford Light is celebrating its fifth anniversary. We are grateful and proud to reach this milestone.
The Light was launched on the simple belief that this community deserves free, independent, local news — a belief first championed by our founders and now embraced by all of you.
Our first series, published on June 7, 2021, honored community members lost during the COVID-19 pandemic, stories that reflect the rich diversity of New Bedford and remain a moving tribute today.
When we started, we never imagined how deeply The Light’s mission would resonate. The impact we have achieved has exceeded our expectations.
Together, we are redefining what is possible for nonprofit local news. We appreciate your support more than we can say and are looking forward to what the next five years will bring.
And while we have your attention, a few exciting updates:
- We have just completed a strategic plan informed by more than 50 community members and stakeholders. It provides a clear roadmap for the years ahead: deepening our impact, expanding our reach, and ensuring our mission endures. We invite you to take a look.
- You can also explore our 2026 Impact Report, which highlights the difference your support has made.
- We will be celebrating our anniversary throughout the summer by participating in community events across the South Coast. More details to come. We hope you will join us in celebrating.
