The behind-the-scenes story of the reopening of The Zeiterion is remarkable, as The Chat host and New Bedford Light opinion columnist Jack Spillane notes.

How did they pull off a $37 million restoration? And now that it’s done, what’s new at The Z? How does the performing arts center, the Festival Theatre and the Symphony Orchestra embrace and fit into the community?

Spillane was joined by Zeiterion President and CEO Rosemary Gill, Z Board of Directors Chair Frank Almeida, Festival Theatre Producing Artistic Director Elizabeth Bettencourt, Festival Theatre co-founder George Charbonneau, and Symphony Orchestra Director of Philanthropic Engagement Rhonda Veugen in an hour-long discussion on all things Z.

  1. Given the shortage of actually “affordable “ housing for n New Bedford or other surrounding areas, my feeling is that the 35 million spent on renovating the Z would’ve gone a long way towards helping people obtain housing rather than spending it on mediocre entertainment during the last few years the Z used many different venues to keep things going, so why not just continue spreading performances around the area And, the most ridiculous part is adding at least three new bars in the venue

    1. There are many that feel the way you do especially taxpayers. For a city that has so many needs and taxes continuing to go up, giving the Zeiterion $Thirty-Five Million Plus for their renovation and a 99 year lease for the price of $ One Dollar and a yearly contribution of $ Five Hundred Thousand Dollars for seven years is extreme for a city with so many problems. I will give credit to the two Councilors that rose and said no (Councilors Morad and Giesta) they were thinking in the best interest of the whole city. New Bedford needs new leadership and a new direction.

  2. Why should the taxpayers fund an overbudget project that doesn’t meet the needs of our community.

  3. The government should not be giving money to any charities, NGOs etc etc.

Anything the government touches is turns to garbage. Look at health care, education, housing , military, etc etc etc
