New Bedford’s North End is now home to an eye-catching mural designed to inspire communities and promote social and environmental resilience.
The mural at 1200 Acushnet Ave. is a product of the 2023 Envision Resilience Challenge, a multi-university design initiative focused on creating hopeful futures in the face of climate change.
The same group created a multimedia exhibit on South Coast climate change resilience, which was displayed at the New Bedford Art Museum earlier this year.
Margo Saulnier, director of creative strategies and arts-based initiatives at New Bedford Creative, which led the project funded by a grant, expressed pride in how the public art project has engaged the local community. “We really value how people think and what they think,” said Saulnier. “We want people to feel proud of where they live.”
More than 50 residents, businesses and organizations in the city’s North End chose a design by student Ethan Moyer, voting on roughly 10 proposals. The painting was assigned to David Andrews, a local Cape Verdean and Wampanoag artist.

Great work all around on this! It’s a beautiful depiction of resilience, empowerment, community and teamwork! Thank you all for your work and for caring about our now and our collective future!
Mr. Andrews seems like a very talented individual with a creative mind, with that in mind, I’m not criticizing him or his ability, but in my opinion, it just looks like more ghetto graffiti on a NYC building, or subway walls. I’m willing to bet that people who haven’t read this story, or know the point the art is meant to convey, more than 50% couldn’t tell you what the mural is, or the meaning behind it.
