What is it like to run the city of New Bedford’s active Parks, Recreation and Beaches department?

Mary Rapoza, who has been its director since 2013, sat down with Jack Spillane to talk about a division of city government that is perhaps more visible to the public than any other.

Rapoza spoke about the need for a better quality park at Dias Field in Ward 3, as well as parks the city has upgraded during her tenure, including the city’s first dog park, Noah’s Place Playground inclusive park, and the soon-to-open Abolition Row Park.

She also talked about the upcoming recreational season, including the Play in the Park summer food program, the Full STEAM Ahead enrichment program and the concert series, including Reggae on the Beach.
