Nathan Collins is an investigative reporter covering the fishing industry, ocean and maritime research, and the blue economy for The New Bedford Light, with support from Report for America. Before joining the newsroom, Collins was the Dallas City Hall watchdog for North Texas NPR affiliate KERA News and a member of The News & Observer’s investigations team based in Raleigh, North Carolina.

While in grad school, Collins earned a Pulitzer finalist nod for his collaboration with the Associated Press on a series that documented the more than 1,000 people who died when police officers subdued them with methods intended to be nonlethal.

Before he became a journalist, Collins was a professional musician who performed with artists including Solange Knowles and toured professionally as a saxophonist with John Fogerty.
