Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

On June 10, over 200 of you gathered at The Black Whale to celebrate five years of independent journalism on the South Coast.

During her remarks, CEO Lean Camara reflected on what the community’s support has made possible. “Because of you, we can stop saying local journalism is in crisis on the South Coast and talk instead about its renaissance.”

And the true measure of that renaissance is the impact strong local journalism has on the South Coast.

“Without The Light, who would hold us accountable?” asked Steve Silverstein, owner of Servedwell Hospitality, New Bedford Light Advisory Council member, and one of our most steadfast supporters.

Our guest speaker, CNN chief anchor and national correspondent John King, raised a glass to the room:  “…what you are doing, what you are supporting here is the most important piece of our fight for the truth…the interest in journalism, the commitment to this community, and the commitment to this organization is just breathtaking and heartwarming.”

King also reflected on his decades in journalism and emphasized three values he believes matter most in journalism today: truth, trust, and optimism.

He made the case that local news is where that work begins.

That belief is at the heart of The Light’s mission. Reaching this five-year milestone was never guaranteed. Because of your support and commitment, we are able to look ahead with hope and gratitude that we can continue to serve the South Coast for years to come.

As our founder, Ken Hartnett, put it, “The Light, at age five, is thriving, vigorous, growing, and here to stay.”
