Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad

Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad that will highlight the Black Communities of the Eastern Seaboard and the Underground Railroad. Like the port of New Bedford, these communities provided liberty and shelter for freedom seekers escaping southern slavery.

The conference is sponsored by the New Bedford Historical Society, the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, and UMass Dartmouth and is free with funding from the National Writers Project and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The all-day conference will be held on Friday, Sept. 23 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
