Dear Readers,

Today we are thrilled to celebrate The New Bedford Light’s first anniversary. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past year — and deeply grateful to you for making it happen.

On June 7, 2021, we launched our nonprofit, community-based news outlet with a promise of high-quality journalism that looks deep into the tough issues facing our city and spotlights the richly diverse culture of our region. We pledged to be nonpartisan, scrupulously independent, and free to all.

To keep those commitments, we asked our community to step up, and you have. A growing number of local businesses proudly sponsor us. A great many individuals among you, our loyal readers, have become generous and ongoing donors.

Several journalism foundations, along with family and community foundations, also support us. They realize local communities are much more likely to thrive when they are illuminated and held accountable by strong, fact-based journalism that provides insight and context. Our community founders knew that, too; their vision got us started and remains embedded in everything we do.

All of you represent the energy that will sustain us financially and enrich us and each other by engaging our readers and informed members of our community’s common conversation.

We have two special events upcoming this month, and we hope to see many of you there; find more details here.

Thank you again for keeping The Light shining. And happy birthday!
