52nd Annual Meeting of Descendants of Whaling Masters

June 13 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The Descendants of Whaling Masters’ 52nd annual meeting is on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from noon to 3 p.m. The program opens with a social hour. A short business meeting follows along with lunch and a featured talk.
Michael P. Dyer, a maritime historian and former curator at Mystic Seaport Museum, presents “Buzzards Bay Hypothesis.” His talk traces early charts of the region and shifting place names. He explores how the name “Buzzards Bay” came to be. Religious tensions involving Quakers, Puritans, and supporters of the Church of England play a role. British naval charts during the American Revolution later fixed the name.
Lunch options include baked stuffed chicken breast, baked scrod, or a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. Tickets are $46 per person. Reservations and payment are due by June 8.
Founded in 1974, Descendants of Whaling Masters has more than 450 members across the country and beyond. Membership is open to descendants of whaling captains, relatives of crew members, and others with an interest in whaling history.
More information is available at whalingmasters.org or by calling 508-287-2482.
