Work and experience: Why are you qualified to run for this office?
I believe I am the most qualified candidate for Massachusetts state representative for the 10th Bristol District because I embody the values, experience, and commitment needed to address our community’s unique challenges.
Growing up in New Bedford and the South Coast area, I have firsthand understanding of our community’s needs. My mother’s journey as an immigrant taught me the importance of opportunity and perseverance, which I carry into my work and advocacy. With over two decades of experience in the corporate world and as a business owner, I understand fiscal responsibility and the importance of efficient budgeting — skills crucial for addressing issues like the rising cost of living, affordable housing, and health care resource strain. Our community faces significant challenges, including a migrant crisis and escalating living costs, and I am committed to tackling these head-on with fresh, independent ideas.
I am dedicated to listening to your concerns and championing solutions that prioritize the South Coast’s prosperity. Together, we can safeguard our community’s well-being, ensuring our families thrive and our businesses grow. I am here to be your voice on Beacon Hill, advocating for a brighter future for all of us.
What is your main reason for running?
My main reason for running as Massachusetts state representative for the 10th Bristol District is to address the pressing challenges our community faces and to ensure that the needs of the South Coast are prioritized at the state level. Our district is at a crossroads, grappling with issues like the migrant crisis, rising costs of living, and strained resources. These challenges threaten the quality of life for families, seniors, and businesses alike.
Having grown up in this community and now raising my own family here, I understand the importance of taking decisive action to protect our way of life. My background in business equips me with the skills necessary to advocate for fiscal responsibility and efficient governance. I am committed to bringing independent thought and fresh ideas to Beacon Hill, focusing on solutions that will enhance our community’s prosperity and well-being.
I am running to be a strong, compassionate voice for the people of the 10th Bristol District, ensuring that our concerns are heard and addressed with conviction. Together, we can work towards a future where our community not only survives but thrives.
Thank you for considering my candidacy and for your support in this mission.
What key issue do you plan to address, and how will you do that?
A key issue I plan to address is the rising cost of living, which is making it increasingly difficult for families in the 10th Bristol District to make ends meet. This issue is compounded by the strain on our resources due to the ongoing migrant crisis, which affects housing, health care, and education. To accomplish this, I will advocate for policies that promote affordable housing and support local businesses to stabilize and reduce costs. I plan to work on streamlining regulations that burden small businesses, ensuring they can thrive and contribute to our local economy. Additionally, I will push for increased state support for health care and education to alleviate the pressure on these critical services.
By fostering a climate of fiscal responsibility and efficiency in state government, we can ensure that our community’s resources are used wisely. I am committed to collaborating with local leaders and stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions that enhance the quality of life for all residents.
With the country splintered by partisan politics, what do you think needs to be done to get Democrats and Republicans to work together?
To encourage Democrats and Republicans to put aside partisan politics and work together for the people, we need to focus on fostering open communication, building trust, and emphasizing shared goals. It starts with establishing common ground by identifying issues that affect us all, such as the economy, education, and health care.
By focusing on shared values and outcomes, we can create a collaborative environment. We should prioritize bipartisan dialogue and create forums where lawmakers from both parties can engage in meaningful conversations. Encouraging transparency and mutual respect is crucial, as is the willingness to listen and consider diverse perspectives.
Leadership plays a vital role in setting the tone for collaboration. Leaders must model bipartisan cooperation through initiatives that reward consensus-building and discourage divisiveness. Additionally, involving community members and local stakeholders in the legislative process can ground discussions in real-world impacts, reminding lawmakers of their responsibility to serve the public good. Ultimately, building relationships across party lines and maintaining a commitment to the welfare of our constituents can help bridge divides.
By focusing on solutions rather than differences, we can effectively address the challenges facing our communities.

I think Joe’s responses to the questions are spot on. Because of his business background and his ties to the community he is definitely in touch with the current challenges we here in southeastern mass are facing. He offers solutions that include the participation of the leadership in the state legislature which is where it all needs to begin. His opponent meanwhile, has proposed increasing the minimum wage to $20/hr which would decimate small business and send prices in the grocery store skyrocketing.
Mr. Pires,
Can you be more specific concerning the “migrant problem” and exactly how it affects the 10th Distict.
