On Wednesday, June 18, The New Bedford Light hosted its fourth annual fundraiser at The Black Whale Kitchen + Bar, an evening celebrating independent journalism and the people who make it possible.

The highlight of the night was guest speaker Steve Engelberg, Pulitzer Prize-winning editor-in-chief of ProPublica, who gave an inspiring speech on the state of nonprofit journalism in 2025 and recognized The Light specifically: “What you’ve done right here in New Bedford … is really amazing. And I know this not just because I’m in nonprofit journalism at the high and mighty national ProPublica, but because I live in the town of Montclair, New Jersey, where for the last five years I’ve been on the board of the Montclair Local, and we are scraping and clawing and trying, and we are nowhere near as big or successful as The New Bedford Light. So I can tell you from personal experience – this is hard – to mobilize the community, get all these people to come out and believe, to contribute, to support, it is just amazingly uphill work, and you’ve done it.”

Thanks to your generosity, the event raised $42,000 to power high-quality local journalism that remains free and accessible to all.

We are deeply grateful for your support and honored to play a role in advancing positive change in New Bedford. Learn how you can continue to support The Light here.
