UMass Dartmouth to Host Colloquium on Portuguese Migration and Mill Work

UMass Dartmouth will host an international colloquium, “Portuguese Migration and Mill Work in New England,” on Oct. 24 and 25, 2025, in the Claire T. Carney Library Grand Reading Room. The event reviews the new volume Migration, Mill Work, and Portuguese Communities in New England and looks ahead in Portuguese American studies.

Sessions’ address history, urban spaces, life narratives, and community politics. The program also includes a screening and discussion of the ethnographic film Saudade. Admission is free. Registration is requested by email to Marlene Roberge at mroberge1@umassd.edu.

The Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives and the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture sponsor the colloquium. It is organized by Mario Pereira with collaborators Bela Feldman-Bianco and Cristiana Bastos.
