Scrimshaw: a beginners hands-on experience

New Bedford is known for its rich scrimshaw tradition. On Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon, participants can learn the basics of this historic art form for $45. The workshop focuses on pin-carved scrimshaw, with practice on small polymer pieces before moving on to cow bone.

The class can choose from the provided designs or bring their own, which should measure about 1 by 3 inches. Cow bone is provided, or students may bring their own. The workshop is designed for beginners, and some drawing experience can be helpful.
