New Bedford Science Café
February 3 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

New Bedford Science Café is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Last Round Bar and Grille.
Engineer Richard Riels will discuss ropeless lobster traps and new tools designed to protect marine mammals while supporting fishing communities. Focus remains on reducing whale entanglements caused by traditional rope systems.
Riels serves as executive director of the Sea Mammal Education Learning Technology Society. The group develops technology that reduces harm to marine life. Low numbers of North Atlantic right whales continue to place pressure on lobster fisheries.
During the presentation, Riels will demonstrate the SMELTS line-free Lift Raft system. The device rests on the seafloor until an acoustic signal triggers its rise to the surface. Hundreds are already in use.
Free parking is available behind the building.
