New Bedford Science Café
October 3 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

New Bedford Science Café allows the public to ask experts questions about scientific subjects every month. October’s speaker is Micheline Labrie, Research Assistant Professor and science lead of the Biodegradability Lab at the School for Marine Science & Technology (SMAST), UMass-Dartmouth. She will discuss testing new materials for ocean-safe biodegradable plastics.
A state-of-the-art R&D facility was opened by UMass-D in 2022 to advance science and standards related to plastic biodegradability. The Biodegradability Laboratory aims to develop and test degradable materials for a variety of industries, including textiles, packaging, and other sectors that contribute to marine pollution. Micheline will demonstrate how the Lab worked closely with PrimaLoft to determine key biodegradable elements.
