New Bedford School Committee to consider ‘Safe Zone’ resolution

NEW BEDFORD — The tabled consideration of a ‘Safe Zone’ resolution is on the School Committee’s agenda for Monday, Aug. 11, the last meeting before school begins this year.

The committee failed on June 9 to pass a resolution that sought to affirm the district’s commitment to protecting immigrant students from federal deportation raids. The committee’s inaction sparked frustration and outrage from many advocates in attendance and led to a walkout by students on June 18.

Also on the agenda are opening of school updates and reports on summer programs.  The first days of school, depending on the grade, are Wednesday, Aug. 27, and Thursday, Aug. 28.
