Updated: New Bedford City Council meeting

NEW BEDFORD — The City Council will hold its only scheduled meeting for the month of August on Thursday, Aug. 21, at City Hall.
New business includes:
1. Motions regarding citizenship for New Bedford Police Department officers
a. WRITTEN MOTION, Councillor Gomes, requesting, that the Ordinance Committee meet with Legal Counsel Atty. David Gerwatowski to establish an Ordinance in the City of New Bedford that would require any person hired by the New Bedford Police Department to be a citizen of the United States.

b. WRITTEN MOTION, Councillor Choquette, pursuant to Chapter 53, Section 18A of the Massachusetts General Laws, requesting, that a non-binding public opinion question be placed on the Municipal Ballot on November 04, 2025, substantially as follows: “Should United States Citizenship be a requirement for a person to be hired as a Police Officer in the City of New Bedford?”
2. Actions regarding the proposed Parallel Products waste site
a.WRITTEN MOTION, Councillor Gomes, requesting, that the New Bedford Board of Health hold a public hearing on the proposed waste transfer facility by Parallel Products, doing business as South Coast Renewables, with the residents of the far north end of New Bedford;
b. Copy of a letter to President Trump from Councillors Gomes and Morad asking for a cease-and-desist order against the site.
3. An ordinance establishing the Clasky Common Transit Oriented Development Overlay District
