During a summer heat wave, New Yorker Richard Sherman, played by Tom Ewell, sends his wife, Helen, played by Evelyn Keyes, and their son to Maine for vacation.
Left alone in Manhattan, he meets a glamorous upstairs neighbor, played by Marilyn Monroe, and quickly becomes infatuated. As he wrestles with thoughts of infidelity, his imagination begins to take over.
