February 22 @ 1:30 pm
The closing weeks of Morabeza: Cape Verdean Community in the South Coast will be marked by a special film screening, live music, and conversation. The exhibit will be on view through Feb. 24 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
Program begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in the Harbor View Gallery. Admission is free with museum entry.
Artist Cândida Rose Baptista will appear alongside a screening of the 45-minute documentary Cândida, directed by Rosalyn Negrón of the University of Massachusetts Boston. The film offers an intimate look at Baptista’s life and work, tracing connections between Cape Verdean heritage, music, and community across generations.
Live music by Baptista will follow the screening. Audience members can take part in a Q&A with the artist and filmmaker.
Documentary follows a second-generation Cape Verdean American singer, songwriter, author, and educator as she returns to Cabo Verde to explore traditional music and its global influence. Journey takes her across the islands, including Brava, her ancestral home. Story blends personal history with cultural discovery. The film was an official selection of the New Bedford Film Festival and received a nomination for Best South Coast Narrative.
