Author Jeffrey C. Fuhrer will discuss his book “The Myth That Made Us: How False Beliefs about Racism and Meritocracy Broke Our Economy and How to Fix It” on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 1 to 2 p.m. The virtual program is free with registration.
Führer is a nonresident senior fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution and a foundation fellow with the Eastern Bank Foundation. He previously served as director of research and executive vice president at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and has held roles with the Federal Reserve System and the Harvard Kennedy School.
The book examines how narratives about race, meritocracy, and limited government shaped the U.S. economy and contributed to wealth gaps. The Führer argues that policy changes, community investment, and expanded opportunity can help address disparities.
