Back When We Were A Community

The New Bedford Historical Society presents “Back When We Were a Community,” a free public lecture on Black community organizing, mutual aid, and collective care.
Mwalim, Prof. Morgan James Peters of UMass Dartmouth, will lead the talk. He also serves as assistant grand historian for the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.
Drawing on African American history, literature, and archival research, the lecture traces the rise of independent Black social and economic institutions. Many remain active today.
The program takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Gallery X. Light refreshments will be served.
Admission is free and open to the public.
