An Unfinished Project: Reflections on the Promises of Revolution at the Nation’s 250th

An opening program for “Forging Independence | Building a Nation” is on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
The new semi-permanent exhibition marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. It looks at regional stories that shaped the fight for independence and the nation that followed. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell will offer welcome remarks. Excerpts from Ken Burns’ The American Revolution will be shown in a 30-minute screening.
A panel discussion follows. Speakers will reflect on how the Revolution reshaped daily life and ideas of nationhood, abolition, citizenship, and race. Naomi Slipp introduces the exhibition and highlights key figures. Lee Blake discusses free people of color and the limits of citizenship. Donika Kelly explores the poetic meaning of the nation’s beginnings.
A light reception follows in the Jacobs Family Gallery. Visitors are invited to view the exhibition.
Copies of The Natural Order of Things will be available in the Museum Store, with a signing opportunity.
