Across the Atlantic, Onto the Field: The Story of Portuguese-American Soccer

May 28 @ 6:00 pm

New Bedford Whaling Museum will host “Across the Atlantic, Onto the Field: The Story of Portuguese American Soccer” on Thursday, May 28, at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for museum members and $20 for nonmembers.

WJFD FM sportscaster John Gonsalves will present a look at soccer’s history across the SouthCoast and the role Portuguese American communities played in growing the sport locally and nationally. Organizers say the program comes at a timely moment as soccer prepares for a global spotlight in 2026.

Following the presentation, Gonsalves will moderate a panel discussion with Lucio Santos, Carlos Medina, and Yasmina Carvalho. The conversation will explore the sport’s cultural influence and its ability to connect communities across generations and borders.

An audience question-and-answer session begins at 7:15 p.m. A reception with light refreshments follows from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Jacobs Family Gallery.
