Today, the shipping and shipbuilding industries are no more deserving of special treatment than other American manufacturers competing in the global marketplace.

One reader: “The UMass Star Store campus was a big component to revitalizing downtown NB when it was opened. I’d like to know more about why this happened.”

One reader: “Great for commuters, and for New Bedford day trippers.” Another: “Changes in working structures, self-driving cars and the like puts the timing in question.”

‘Do we have options to control littering beyond nips? Do we want to depend on the state to do something? Can we get help from industry to address some of the trash issues in the city? Can we impose a fee directly to retailers?’

A Dartmouth High senior writes: “It appears that our Supreme Court has taken a ‘color-blind’ approach to this complex issue. Neither African Americans nor Asian Americans are a homogenous group and treating them as such overlooks the diverse histories and experiences these students bring to college-workplaces.”

Reader: “Accompanied by graphics primarily provided by the mayor’s office, the column could easily be part of the city’s bargaining strategy.”

Siting a new school at the Goodyear location will eliminate one of the largest, most promising sites for housing in the city, with housing developers already interested. By using the DeValles site, the council would save taxpayers millions.

And the wind versus whales debate rages on, as one reader writes: “It’s dangerous to all animals, including us, to delay clean energy.”

Reader: “Vineyard Wind’s exclusion of the longshoremen’s union was unjust, and the union’s determination to address this issue deserves praise. This successful strike demonstrates the power of collective action.”
