New Bedford Science Café: “High-Tech Leap: Catching the Right Fish”
October 6 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

New Bedford Science Café will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Last Round Bar & Grille. Kevin Stokesbury of UMass Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology will be the guest speaker. The event is free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Stokesbury will discuss technology designed to help fishermen collect information about cod and other groundfish. His team developed the SMAST open cod-end system.
The system uses underwater video to show fish as they pass through a net. Researchers are exploring how the technology could help fishermen monitor catches in real time. It may also help reduce unwanted bycatch.
Stokesbury was the founding chair of SMAST’s Department of Fisheries Oceanography. He was named The Standard-Times Man of the Year in 2018.
