Author Book Talk: Carol Gardner

Author Carol Gardner will discuss her latest book during a talk on Thursday, June 25, from noon to 1 p.m.
Gardner has more than 30 years of experience as a writer, journalist, and educator. She earned a doctorate in English from Johns Hopkins University and has taught at Johns Hopkins, Wake Forest, and Florida State universities. Her work has appeared in publications including The Washington Post and The Women’s Review of Books.
The book follows two families in Portland, Maine, whose lives intersect during the 1800s.
Reuben Ruby, who was Black, became an antislavery activist and Underground Railroad operative. Nathaniel Gordon came from a White merchant family tied to the slave trade.
Through their stories, Gardner explores race, freedom, and division in the North during the age of slavery.
