Back When We Were A Community

The New Bedford Historical Society presents a talk on organizing and mutual aid in Black communities in Massachusetts on April 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the New Bedford Public Library. Admission is free.
“Back When We Were A Community,” presented by Mwalim (Prof. MJ Peters), traces networks of care and resistance from the 18th and 19th centuries to the present. The program highlights institutions and informal systems that sustained Black life, with connections to New York and Philadelphia.
Mwalim is a professor of English, communication, and Black studies at UMass Dartmouth. He also serves as assistant grand historian for the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and is artistic director of Oversoul Theatre Collective Inc.
The event is free and open to the public.
