A 19-year-old man was found shot to death in a car parked on Acushnet Avenue a few blocks south of Monte Park in New Bedford on Tuesday night, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. It’s the city’s third fatal shooting this year.
New Bedford police and an ambulance crew were called to Acushnet Avenue near Griffin Court about 10 p.m. by a “shotspotter” alert and a 911 call, the DA’s office said in a brief statement Wednesday morning. They found the man in a black Hyundai Sonata shot once in the head. The car showed marks of several projectile strikes, the statement said.
The man was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not yet released the identity of the victim.
It was not clear from the DA’s statement if the man was in the driver’s seat of the car, and no further information was made available. The shooting is being investigated by State Police assigned to the DA’s office, homicide prosecutors and New Bedford police.
The shooting comes nearly two months after 32-year-old Karina Martinez-Ortiz was shot several times in an apartment house on Bolton Street in the South End on the evening of March 4. Wilo Morales-Colon, 49, who lived in the same building, was arrested less than 36 hours later in Springfield, and has been charged with first-degree murder.
Early on the morning of Sunday, Jan. 11, Cristiano Macedo, 27, of New Bedford, was shot and killed inside the Morna Lounge on Acushnet Avenue in the North End. Two women were also wounded inside the restaurant/bar.
Danielson Varela, 19, of New Bedford, was charged in the shooting and was being held at the Bristol County Jail and House of Correction.
