A 32-year-old woman was found shot to death in front of her apartment in the South End on Tuesday evening, the second fatal shooting in New Bedford this year, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

New Bedford Police officers and an ambulance crew found Karina Martinez-Ortiz lying in the first-floor hallway at 438 Bolton St., between Rivet and Thompson streets, at about 6:20 p.m. She was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead of gunshot wounds.

The three-paragraph news release from the office of Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III indicated that Martinez-Ortiz had been shot more than once, but gave no further details.

The investigation is being conducted by State Police detectives assigned to the DA’s office and homicide prosecutors, with assistance from New Bedford Police.

It’s the second fatal shooting in New Bedford this year. Early on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 11, Cristiano Macedo, 27, of New Bedford, was shot and killed inside the Morna Lounge on Acushnet Avenue in the North End. Two women were also wounded.

Danielson Varela, 19, of New Bedford, has been charged in the shooting of Macedo and was being held at the Bristol County Jail and House of Correction. A probable cause hearing in Third District Court scheduled in the case last month was postponed pending Bristol County grand jury proceedings.

Seven people died in homicides in New Bedford last year, including four in August.

  1. We are grateful for the news, but unfortunate of the happenings. It’s very sad that these things are happening. We appreciate you keeping us informed.

  2. Don’t let the Globe Podcast break the story about why the Chief stepped down. You should break it first. Interesting how the Mayor will be out of town on March 11?
