SUMMARY:New Exhibit Explores Bristol County’s History of Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office will open Bristol County: Incarcerated on Oct. 24. The exhibit traces the history of local incarceration from the 18th-century jail in Taunton to New Bedford’s Ash Street Jail. The Ash Street facility is the oldest continuously operating jail in the nation. \nArtifacts include the Taunton jail’s debtor book from 1785 and Lizzie Borden’s 1892 mittimus. Visitors will also see 1920s inmate photographs\, 19th-century jail logs\, and materials from the sheriff’s office archives. \nThe exhibit was curated by Melanie Botvin with research by Henry Claudy\, a New York University graduate student. \nThe New Bedford Whaling Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Ahab’s Head: American Vengeance
DESCRIPTION:Ahab’s Head: American Vengeance opens December 13 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The new installation is by Boston artist and sculptor Heidi Whitman. It is an immersive look at obsession\, power\, and the American whaling story. \nWhitman is known for intricate “mental maps” that explore emotion\, memory\, and place. She applies that style to Moby-Dick. She reimagines Ahab’s pursuit as a layered map of fixation. Paper\, shadow\, and structure trace themes of violence and mania in the novel and in America today. \nHer work has appeared at the Addison Gallery of American Art\, the Fitchburg Art Museum\, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. It is held in museum\, public\, and corporate collections such as the Federal Reserve\, Boston Public Library\, and the McMullen Museum of Art. She received a Mass Cultural Council fellowship in 2021. \nAhab’s Head ties together maritime history\, literature\, and contemporary art\, presenting the story through a modern lens.

Their vivid works draw on Zapotec cosmology and assert cultural identity. \nAdela Goldbard examines memory and power\, often through symbolic acts of destruction. Prints by Mario Guzmán highlight community\, labor\, and political struggle\, alongside work from Subterráneos\, a collective he leads in Oaxaca. \nRenata Cassiano Alvarez shows pieces from Siempre Voy a Volver. Magnan’s sculpture is also featured at the UMass School of Law. DESCRIPTION:NEW BEDFORD — The city of New Bedford is pleased to announce the opening of the Swap Shop\,  a new initiative at the New Bedford Recycling Center that allows residents to drop off and pick up reusable items\, for free. \nThe Swap Shop\, located at 1103 Shawmut Ave.\, is  accepting donations of gently used items\, specifically: books\, tableware (such as dishes and silverware)\, cookware\, and bakeware (like pots\, pans\, and baking sheets). Electronic items and household appliances\, including toasters\, microwaves\, and other plug-in devices\, are not accepted at this time. \nHow it works: \n• All items are free to take.\n• Donations are limited to three items per day and must be approved by a Recycling Center attendant before being dropped off.\n• Items must be clean\, functional\, and in a condition you’d be proud to give—or pleased to receive.\n• The city reserves the right to refuse any item for any reason\, regardless of condition or category. DESCRIPTION:Oversoul Theatre Collective Inc.\, in partnership with 3rd Eye Unlimited\, is reviving community-based Black theater in New Bedford through Griot’s Corner\, a weekly workshop led by playwright and arts educator Mwalim. Actors\, spoken-word artists\, musicians\, and dancers from the city’s Black and Brown communities are invited to help form a new ensemble centered on cultural storytelling.\n\nProgram reconnects with “The Studio\,” a youth theater initiative launched in 1997 that helped mentor a generation of local artists. Oversoul’s roots trace to Boston’s New African Company\, founded in 1968\, and to a broader tradition of Black performance in the United States.\n\nWorkshops focus on improvisation and collaboration\, with participants developing an original piece to be presented in May.\n\nSessions are held on Tuesdays from 8 to 10 p.m.\, Feb. 10 through May 5\, at 3rd Eye Unlimited\, 230 Union St.\n\nParticipants should bring a notebook and wear comfortable clothing and sneakers.
