SUMMARY:New Bedford Science Café
DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Science Café meets Tuesday\, May 5\, 6–8 p.m. at The Last Round Bar & Grille\, 908 Purchase St.\, New Bedford. \nDavid Robinson\, director and chief archaeologist of the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources\, will speak. His talk is titled “The Surprise Discovery of Revolutionary War Shipwrecks in New Bedford Harbor.” \nCleanup efforts in 2009 and 2016 uncovered two burned schooners dating to the Revolutionary War. Robinson believes these vessels were part of about 70 destroyed during the British attack on Sept. 5-6\, 1778. \nRobinson has studied more than 50 shipwrecks and will explain how these finds changed detection methods. Free parking is available behind the building.

SUMMARY:New Bedford Science Café
DESCRIPTION:New Bedford Science Café is scheduled for Tuesday\, Feb. 3\, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Last Round Bar and Grille.\n\nEngineer Richard Riels will discuss ropeless lobster traps and new tools designed to protect marine mammals while supporting fishing communities. Focus remains on reducing whale entanglements caused by traditional rope systems.\n\nRiels serves as executive director of the Sea Mammal Education Learning Technology Society. The group develops technology that reduces harm to marine life. Low numbers of North Atlantic right whales continue to place pressure on lobster fisheries.\n\nDuring the presentation\, Riels will demonstrate the SMELTS line-free Lift Raft system. The device rests on the seafloor until an acoustic signal triggers its rise to the surface. Hundreds are already in use.\n\nFree parking is available behind the building.\n\nMore information and recent event videos are available at newbedfordsciencecafe.weebly.com.

SUMMARY:New Bedford Science Café
DESCRIPTION:New Bedford Science Café will meet on Tuesday\, Dec. 2\, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Last Round Bar & Grille. Seth Lederman\, MD\, CEO of Tonix Pharmaceuticals\, will speak on the story behind a new FDA-approved fibromyalgia drug. Tonix operates a biologics manufacturing facility in the New Bedford Business Park. \nTonix received approval for the drug Tonmya in August. It is the first new fibromyalgia treatment in more than 15 years. Fibromyalgia affects millions of adults and has been challenging to treat because of its varied symptoms. Lederman will connect the well-known fairytale “The Princess and the Pea” to the condition’s sensitivity and explain how researchers brought the drug from concept to approval. \nLederman earned his medical degree from Columbia University and taught there for two decades. He directed research in immunology\, infectious disease\, and autoimmune disease. \nFree parking is available behind the building. Recent event videos are on the Science Café website.
