SUMMARY:New Exhibit Explores Bristol County’s History of Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office will open Bristol County: Incarcerated on Oct. 24. The exhibit traces the history of local incarceration from the 18th-century jail in Taunton to New Bedford’s Ash Street Jail. The Ash Street facility is the oldest continuously operating jail in the nation. \nArtifacts include the Taunton jail’s debtor book from 1785 and Lizzie Borden’s 1892 mittimus. Visitors will also see 1920s inmate photographs\, 19th-century jail logs\, and materials from the sheriff’s office archives. \nThe exhibit was curated by Melanie Botvin with research by Henry Claudy\, a New York University graduate student. \nThe New Bedford Whaling Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Early Portrait Photography in New Bedford
DESCRIPTION:See the faces of 19th-century America in a new special exhibition opening Jan. 16\, 2026.  “Look Pleasant\, Please: Early Portrait Photography in New Bedford\,” explores portrait photography in a growing and diverse coastal city.\n\nImages highlight the changing relationship between photographer and sitter in a complex urban economy. Featured works include one of the last known portraits of Frederick Douglass\, taken by Black photographer James E. Reed\, along with images by immigrant and women photographers building careers in New Bedford.\n\nThe exhibition invites visitors to reflect on 19th-century society and consider how people choose to present themselves today.

SUMMARY:Proteanna: Susan Heideman exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Proteanna: Susan Heideman is on view at the New Bedford Whaling Museum from May 29 through Nov. 1. The exhibition features large-scale mixed-media works by Heideman inspired by ocean life and imagined underwater forms. Combining watercolor\, collage\, and hand embroidery\, the pieces create richly layered\, textured compositions that blur the line between real and imagined marine organisms. \nHeideman is a professor emerita of art at Smith College whose work is held in museum\, university\, and corporate collections across the country.
