SUMMARY:New Exhibit Explores Bristol County’s History of Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office will open Bristol County: Incarcerated on Oct. 24. The exhibit traces the history of local incarceration from the 18th-century jail in Taunton to New Bedford’s Ash Street Jail. The Ash Street facility is the oldest continuously operating jail in the nation. \nArtifacts include the Taunton jail’s debtor book from 1785 and Lizzie Borden’s 1892 mittimus. Visitors will also see 1920s inmate photographs\, 19th-century jail logs\, and materials from the sheriff’s office archives. \nThe exhibit was curated by Melanie Botvin with research by Henry Claudy\, a New York University graduate student. \nThe New Bedford Whaling Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:See the faces of 19th-century America in a new special exhibition opening Jan. 16\, 2026.  “Look Pleasant\, Please: Early Portrait Photography in New Bedford\,” explores portrait photography in a growing and diverse coastal city.\n\nImages highlight the changing relationship between photographer and sitter in a complex urban economy. Featured works include one of the last known portraits of Frederick Douglass\, taken by Black photographer James E. Reed\, along with images by immigrant and women photographers building careers in New Bedford.\n\nThe exhibition invites visitors to reflect on 19th-century society and consider how people choose to present themselves today.

DESCRIPTION:A screening of the short film “The Petal Pusher” is scheduled for Tuesday\, May 12\, at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $25.\n\nThe 15-minute film looks at New York City’s Penn Station through the story of “The Petal Pusher\,” a longtime flower shop once known to generations of commuters. Directed by David Abel and Mark Chesak\, the film reflects on family\, loss\, and the station’s changing character after renovations forced the business to close.\n\nA panel discussion and audience Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening. Guests can also attend a casual reception with light bites\, a cash bar\, and fresh flower bouquets available for purchase from a local business.

DESCRIPTION:New Bedford Whaling Museum will host “Across the Atlantic\, Onto the Field: The Story of Portuguese American Soccer” on Thursday\, May 28\, at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for museum members and $20 for nonmembers. \nWJFD FM sportscaster John Gonsalves will present a look at soccer’s history across the SouthCoast and the role Portuguese American communities played in growing the sport locally and nationally. Organizers say the program comes at a timely moment as soccer prepares for a global spotlight in 2026. \nFollowing the presentation\, Gonsalves will moderate a panel discussion with Lucio Santos\, Carlos Medina\, and Yasmina Carvalho. The conversation will explore the sport’s cultural influence and its ability to connect communities across generations and borders. \nAn audience question-and-answer session begins at 7:15 p.m. A reception with light refreshments follows from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Jacobs Family Gallery.
