SUMMARY:New Bedford Science Café
DESCRIPTION:Guests will discuss “Ensuring Healthy Oysters: Best Growing Practices and the Reality of Regulatory Restraints.” \nDale Leavitt and Christian Petitpas work in different fields but share one goal: protecting oysters. \nLeavitt\, an educator and aquaculturist\, co-owns West Island Oysters in Nasketucket Bay off Fairhaven. His floating-cage farm can yield up to one million oysters in a good year. \nPetitpas is assistant director at the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. She leads the Shellfish Sanitation and Management Program and issues emergency closures when water quality drops. \nNew buoy sensors may help reduce closures by giving clearer water readings. \nFree parking in back. Videos of recent events are on the website.

SUMMARY:Emma Kathleen Hepburn Ferrer: The Unicorn\, and Other Creatures of Hope exhibit
DESCRIPTION:UMass Dartmouth CVPA Campus Gallery presents Emma Kathleen Hepburn Ferrer’s first U.S. solo exhibition. The opening reception is Thursday\, Nov. 6\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. An artist talk starts at 6 p.m. in Lecture Hall 153. Dr. Nina Levent and gallery director Viera Levitt will introduce Ferrer. Music faculty Jing Wang and Will Riley will perform. Light refreshments will be served. \nFerrer showcases the unicorn as a symbol of liberty\, purity\, and hope. Her work draws on “The Unicorn Tapestries” at The Met Cloisters and European myths. Paintings show the unicorn as a spiritual being and a figure of sovereignty and sacrifice. \nHer 2025 show “The Scapegoat” also explored ritual and the sacred. Works like The Annunciation of the Unicorn and The Chosen One universally reimagine biblical imagery.

DESCRIPTION:The Mattapoisett Museum will unveil its new permanent exhibit\, “From the Land to the Shore: The Wampanoag of Mattapoisett\,” on Thursday\, Nov. 6\, at 6 p.m. \nThe exhibit shares the long history and living culture of the Wampanoag people\, who have called this region home for more than 12\,000 years. It tells their story through the early contact and colonization periods\, King Philip’s War\, and how their community continues today. \nCurator Connor Gaudet collaborated with Aquinnah Wampanoag historian Linda Coombs and designer Steven Peters of SmokeSygnals Indigenous Creative Productions. A highlight is a restored diorama of a Wampanoag summer village created by Old Rochester Regional High School students in the 1990s. \nThe exhibit offers a thoughtful look at the area’s Indigenous roots.
