SUMMARY:Black Theater with Community Workshop in New Bedford
DESCRIPTION:Oversoul Theatre Collective Inc.\, in partnership with 3rd Eye Unlimited\, is reviving community-based Black theater in New Bedford through Griot’s Corner\, a weekly workshop led by playwright and arts educator Mwalim. Actors\, spoken-word artists\, musicians\, and dancers from the city’s Black and Brown communities are invited to help form a new ensemble centered on cultural storytelling.\n\nProgram reconnects with “The Studio\,” a youth theater initiative launched in 1997 that helped mentor a generation of local artists. Oversoul’s roots trace to Boston’s New African Company\, founded in 1968\, and to a broader tradition of Black performance in the United States.\n\nWorkshops focus on improvisation and collaboration\, with participants developing an original piece to be presented in May.\n\nSessions are held on Tuesdays from 8 to 10 p.m.\, Feb. 10 through May 5\, at 3rd Eye Unlimited\, 230 Union St.\n\nParticipants should bring a notebook and wear comfortable clothing and sneakers.

SUMMARY:Special Performance at the new Black Box Theater
DESCRIPTION:A special performance is scheduled for April 1 in the new black box theater at SoCo Movement Arts on Pope’s Island in New Bedford. Doors open at 5 p.m. The performance begins at 6 p.m. A question-and-answer session and a meet-and-greet with the dancers will follow. \nThe space opened in February with a nearly sold-out performance. Organizers plan additional dance programs and educational events. The venue may be the city’s first black box theater\, pending confirmation with historians. \nThe founder and director grew up in Mattapoisett and built a dance career in New York City before returning to the South Coast. The studio opened in 2020 and later rebranded as SoCo Movement Arts\, expanding its programs and adding the theater. \nA panel discussion on April 21 will feature Ballet RI Artistic Director Kathleen Breen Combs and moderator Shura Baryshnikov. Organizers say the goal is to expand arts programming on Pope’s Island.
