SUMMARY:New Exhibit Explores Bristol County’s History of Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office will open Bristol County: Incarcerated on Oct. 24. The exhibit traces the history of local incarceration from the 18th-century jail in Taunton to New Bedford’s Ash Street Jail. The Ash Street facility is the oldest continuously operating jail in the nation. \nArtifacts include the Taunton jail’s debtor book from 1785 and Lizzie Borden’s 1892 mittimus. Visitors will also see 1920s inmate photographs\, 19th-century jail logs\, and materials from the sheriff’s office archives. \nThe exhibit was curated by Melanie Botvin with research by Henry Claudy\, a New York University graduate student. \nThe New Bedford Whaling Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Gallery X seeks submissions for “Queer Futures\,” a Pride Month exhibition exploring visions of the future. Themes include utopia\, queer sci-fi\, solarpunk\, Afro and Indigenous Futurism\, and personal hopes. Broad interpretations are welcome. Artists of all backgrounds may submit\, with encouragement for queer and BIPOC artists. Submissions are free. \nThe show runs May 6 through May 17. Participant should submit work during gallery hours or by appointment through May 17. Artists complete a submission form at drop-off. The exhibition is non-juried and open to all media. Wall pieces must be ready to hang. DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Science Café meets Tuesday\, May 5\, 6–8 p.m. at The Last Round Bar & Grille\, 908 Purchase St.\, New Bedford. \nDavid Robinson\, director and chief archaeologist of the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources\, will speak. His talk is titled “The Surprise Discovery of Revolutionary War Shipwrecks in New Bedford Harbor.” \nCleanup efforts in 2009 and 2016 uncovered two burned schooners dating to the Revolutionary War. Robinson believes these vessels were part of about 70 destroyed during the British attack on Sept. 5-6\, 1778. \nRobinson has studied more than 50 shipwrecks and will explain how these finds changed detection methods. Free parking is available behind the building.

SUMMARY:Black Theater with Community Workshop in New Bedford
DESCRIPTION:Oversoul Theatre Collective Inc.\, in partnership with 3rd Eye Unlimited\, is reviving community-based Black theater in New Bedford through Griot’s Corner\, a weekly workshop led by playwright and arts educator Mwalim. Actors\, spoken-word artists\, musicians\, and dancers from the city’s Black and Brown communities are invited to help form a new ensemble centered on cultural storytelling.\n\nProgram reconnects with “The Studio\,” a youth theater initiative launched in 1997 that helped mentor a generation of local artists. Oversoul’s roots trace to Boston’s New African Company\, founded in 1968\, and to a broader tradition of Black performance in the United States.\n\nWorkshops focus on improvisation and collaboration\, with participants developing an original piece to be presented in May.\n\nSessions are held on Tuesdays from 8 to 10 p.m.\, Feb. 10 through May 5\, at 3rd Eye Unlimited\, 230 Union St.\n\nParticipants should bring a notebook and wear comfortable clothing and sneakers.

Hundreds of people are served each month. Program volunteers also help stock shelves and assist with distribution.
