DESCRIPTION:New Bedford Whaling Museum will kick off its 30th annual Moby-Dick Marathon weekend with the Melville Scholars’ Dinner and Lecture on Jan. 2\, 2026\, in the Harbor View Gallery. \nThe special evening begins with a cocktail reception at 5:15 p.m.\, followed by remarks from museum president Amanda McMullen. \nAt 6:00 p.m.\, keynote speaker Joe Roman\, Ph.D.\, conservation biologist and author\, will present “Whales\, Worlds\, and the Wild Imagination: Lessons from Melville to Modern Ecology.” \nDinner and conversation follow at 6:45 p.m. \nRoman is a fellow and writer in residence at the University of Vermont’s Gund Institute for Environment and the author of “Eat\, Poop\, Die: How Animals Make Our World.” \nTickets are $75 for members; $100 for nonmembers.

SUMMARY:30th Annual Moby-Dick Marathon
DESCRIPTION:The Moby-Dick Marathon is back for the 30th year\, honoring Herman Melville’s novel and New Bedford’s whaling history. \nThe mid-winter traditions open Friday\, Jan. 2\, with a Melville Scholars Dinner and Lecture\, the only ticketed event. Conservation biologist Joe Roman delivers the keynote. \nFree public programming begins Saturday morning with Stump the Scholars\, followed by the start of the 25-hour read-a-thon at noon. Massachusetts Poet Laureate Regie Gibson reads the opening line\, “Call me Ishmael\,” aboard the Lagoda. \nReadings continue across multiple museum spaces\, including the Seamen’s Bethel and Cook Memorial Theater\, with overnight sessions and family-friendly activities. The marathon concludes Sunday around 1 p.m. with the epilogue. \nAdmission is free all day Saturday and until 1 p.m. Sunday.
