SUMMARY:LIFELONG LEARNING: Short-course in the History of Photography\, 1839–1900
DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Whaling Museum will host a lifelong learning course on the history of photography from 1839 to 1900. \nThe program includes six weekly 80-minute virtual sessions starting March 9. It ends with an in-person workshop and curator-led tour on April 27 at the museum. \nSchedule: \n\nMarch 9 — Photography’s origins\, 1839\nMarch 16 — Competing technologies\nMarch 23 — Wet-Plate photography\nMarch 30 —World events: photography as documentary\nApril 6 — Art vs Industry: photography as medium\nApril 13 — Kodak and the introduction of Snapshot photography\nApril 27 — In-person workshop at NBWM / curator-led tour of “Look Pleasant Please”\n\nNaomi Slipp and Marina Dawn Wells will lead the course. Students will use works from the museum’s collection to study early photography\, new technologies\, and the rise of Kodak. \nCost is $225 for members and $275 for nonmembers. The three-class mini bundle is $100 for members and $125 for nonmembers.

Night. \nThe free program highlights a partnership that brings together students\, scientists\, fishermen\, and artists to explore ocean science and climate change through research and art. \nThis is part of a two-year collaboration with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance\, working with artist Jill Pelto. Students studied how ocean conditions affect fish habitats through hands-on work with researchers and fishermen.

SUMMARY:Homeschool Day at the Whaling Museum
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool families are invited to Homeschool Day on Tuesday\, March 31\, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Activities focus on art\, history\, science\, and culture. \nDiscounted admission is $10 for students ages 4 to 18 and $12 for adults. Children under 3 are free. General admission includes the Kid’s Corner\, Interactive Topographic Sand Table\, Inflatable Whale\, and access to the Lagoda Whaling Ship lower deck. \nA hands-on Squid Dissection Workshop will be offered at 9:45 a.m.\, 11:30 a.m.\, and 1:30 p.m. The session costs $7 per student and is recommended for ages 8 and older. Space is limited. \nVisitors can also add the 25-minute 3D film Wonders of the Arctic for $4 per person\, with showings throughout the day. \nDrop-in activities\, story times\, and guided tours will will be available across the museum. Visitors may bring their own lunch to enjoy in the Harbor View Gallery. \n  \n
