SUMMARY:Unlocking Community through Empowering Creativity: DATMA's spring public art fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:DATMA will hold its annual spring fundraiser\, Unlocking Community Through Empowering Creativity\, to support this summer’s public art projects. Proceeds will help fund Bug Out\, a series of large\, colorful bug sculptures created by local high school artists. \nThe salon-style event will feature food\, drinks\, guest speakers\, and community conversation focused on creativity and connection. Speakers include Michael Rose\, founder of New England Art News\, Andy Anello\, founder of New Moon Dance Party\, and Zoe Benza. \nSpeakers will discuss building creative platforms that offer inspiration\, resources\, and community outside traditional institutions. The fundraiser will also help cover the cost of powder coating the Bug Out sculptures. \nAdmission is $50 and is 100% tax-deductible. The fee includes appetizers and beverages.

SUMMARY:Keeping an Artist Journal from the Queer Perspective workshop
DESCRIPTION:Last call to register for a workshop with artist George Summers Jr. “Keeping an Artist Journal from the Queer Perspective” on Saturday\, March 14\, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Marion Art Center. Lunch and basic supplies are included. Advance registration is required through the Marion Art Center website. \nBoston-based artist and educator George Summers Jr. leads this practical session exploring journaling and sketchbook practices as tools for imaginative expression and personal storytelling. Participants will experiment with writing\, sketching\, collage\, and mixed media while developing ways to document identity and lived experience through art. \nSummers has more than 35 years of experience in batik and textile arts. His work shows a career defined by the Boston arts community and his perspective as a gay artist. Materials and adhesives are provided. SUMMARY:Being Seen: Celebrating Pride in the SouthCoast
DESCRIPTION:DATMA presents “Being Seen: Celebrating SouthCoast Pride\,” a public art installation and exhibition honoring the LGBTQ+ community. \nAn opening celebration runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday\, Feb. 14. Admission is free and open to the public. \nThe project debuted in June 2025 during New Bedford’s Pride Block Party and will travel to four SouthCoast communities through November 2026. Using upcycled textiles\, the work was led by New York–based artist and LGBTQ+ activist Liz Collins and created with help from more than 100 local residents and organizations. \nAn indoor gallery exhibition adds history and context. Featured work comes from LGBTQ+ artists selected through a community call for art. The exhibit also highlights the Pride movement and local figures\, including New Bedford resident David B. Boyce. \nOutdoor public art is on view beginning Jan. 12. The gallery exhibition runs Feb. 13 through March 13\, 2026. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Movies at the MAC Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the DATMA/MA exhibition\, Being Seen: C”elebrating Pride in the SouthCoast.” This special film screening honors lives lost to AIDS and the power of activism. \nThe screening is on Wednesday\, Feb. 11. Admission is $5. \nThe film explores the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt\, a handmade monument that transformed grief into action. Winner of the Academy Award for best documentary feature\, it centers on human stories often hidden by statistics. An all-vocal score by Bobby McFerrin adds to its emotional impact. \nThrough a wide range of voices\, the film examines the communities affected by HIV/AIDS. It also confronts stigma\, misinformation\, and political failure that deepened the crisis. \n
