SUMMARY:New Exhibit Explores Bristol County’s History of Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:The New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office will open Bristol County: Incarcerated on Oct. 24. The exhibit traces the history of local incarceration from the 18th-century jail in Taunton to New Bedford’s Ash Street Jail. The Ash Street facility is the oldest continuously operating jail in the nation. \nArtifacts include the Taunton jail’s debtor book from 1785 and Lizzie Borden’s 1892 mittimus. Visitors will also see 1920s inmate photographs\, 19th-century jail logs\, and materials from the sheriff’s office archives. \nThe exhibit was curated by Melanie Botvin with research by Henry Claudy\, a New York University graduate student. \nThe New Bedford Whaling Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Programming includes classroom learning\, health services\, parent education\, family support\, and meals and snacks. Part-day and full-day preschool options are available.\n\nFree bus transportation is available for families without transportation. Child care vouchers are accepted for full-day services. DESCRIPTION:WAREHAM — Damien’s Food Pantry provides food to residents of Bristol\, Plymouth and Barnstable counties on Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. \nIts mission is to help end hunger in the South Coast region of Massachusetts by providing food to individuals experiencing food insecurity\, promoting education and awareness about hunger in our community\, and providing information to our guests about other community resources. All are welcome. \nFirst-time visitors will need to provide information about their household. They are required to complete a short application\, show proof of residency\, and verify all occupants residing in the home. Verifications will be required annually. New applications are accepted Thursdays and Saturdays between 8-11:30 a.m. \nThe last shop of the day will start at 11:45 a.m.  Anyone arriving after 11:45 a.m. will receive a pre-packaged box of food. \nThe pantry will be closed Friday\, July 4- Monday\, July 7. \nThe organization makes food available to over 1\,200 households monthly.  If you or someone you know needs food\, please contact us.   The pantry is located at 242 Marion Road\, Wareham\, MA 02571.  Mailing Address: P.O. Box 730\, East Wareham\, MA 02538.  Phone: 508-295-3486 / Fax: 508-299-6582. \nVolunteers are often sought. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer\, please phone the pantry at: 508-295-3486 and leave your name and phone number or apply online here.  \nThe opportunities range from food distribution\, stocking shelves to data entry and translation services.  Volunteers who work the backroom should be able to lift 25 pounds. If you are unable to physically volunteer at the pantry\, but would still like to help\, we have opportunities for remote activities. \nHere is more information about volunteer opportunities.   \nThe pantry depends on financial support\, volunteers and food donations from individuals\, corporations\, agencies\, and foundations to help feed the hungry.  Donations are tax deductible.

DESCRIPTION:WAREHAM — Damien’s Food Pantry provides food to residents of Bristol\, Plymouth and Barnstable counties on Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. \nIts mission is to help end hunger in the South Coast region of Massachusetts by providing food to individuals experiencing food insecurity\, promoting education and awareness about hunger in our community\, and providing information to our guests about other community resources. All are welcome. \nFirst-time visitors will need to provide information about their household. They are required to complete a short application\, show proof of residency\, and verify all occupants residing in the home. Verifications will be required annually. New applications are accepted Thursdays and Saturdays between 8-11:30 a.m. \nThe last shop of the day will start at 11:45 a.m.  Anyone arriving after 11:45 a.m. will receive a pre-packaged box of food. \nThe pantry will be closed Friday\, July 4- Monday\, July 7. \nThe organization makes food available to over 1\,200 households monthly.  If you or someone you know needs food\, please contact us.   The pantry is located at 242 Marion Road\, Wareham\, MA 02571.  Mailing Address: P.O. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer\, please phone the pantry at: 508-295-3486 and leave your name and phone number or apply online here.  \nThe opportunities range from food distribution\, stocking shelves to data entry and translation services.  Volunteers who work the backroom should be able to lift 25 pounds. If you are unable to physically volunteer at the pantry\, but would still like to help\, we have opportunities for remote activities. \nHere is more information about volunteer opportunities.   \nThe pantry depends on financial support\, volunteers and food donations from individuals\, corporations\, agencies\, and foundations to help feed the hungry.  Donations are tax deductible.

Organizers say the walk reflects the center’s belief that personal peace may help create a more peaceful world. Teachings at the center are based on the work of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso\, founder of the New Kadampa Tradition. \nFree registration is requested through the center’s website so organizers can plan for refreshments. Event T-shirts are also available for purchase online for $35.

Specialty items include the chance to have a minor character named after a bidder in an upcoming novel by Emily M. Danforth.\n\nAdmission is $10 and includes light fare and beverages. Tickets will be available online and at the door. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Electronic items and household appliances\, including toasters\, microwaves\, and other plug-in devices\, are not accepted at this time. \nHow it works: \n• All items are free to take.\n• Donations are limited to three items per day and must be approved by a Recycling Center attendant before being dropped off.\n• Items must be clean\, functional\, and in a condition you’d be proud to give—or pleased to receive.\n• The city reserves the right to refuse any item for any reason\, regardless of condition or category. Participants will be asked to provide basic information including ZIP code and the number of people living in their household. No photo ID is required.\n\nEach household receives prepackaged fresh\, frozen\, and pantry food items based on availability. Markets typically last an hour and a half\, or less when food runs out\, which happens often. There are no town residency\, eligibility\, or Y membership requirements.\n\nAll in need are welcome to take advantage of this free program on a first-come\, first-served basis.\n\nThe markets are part of  the Full Plate Project (FPP)  which embodies the Y’s mission of strengthening communities through youth development\, healthy living\, and social responsibility.
